di Harm Wulf
The essential characteristic of this artist is able to capture the viewer's attention at first glance. His evocative paintings, the simple scenes, essential, emotive, the evocative Figure, its facilities scenic lead us to an inner joy that emanates from the pure beauty. Dombrowski worked to engraving wood with a mastery of their own a few other artists. He has produced more than two thousand engravings and, despite the limited flexibility of identity characteristic of this art graphics, failed to mark with force his unique style. He was born on 12 September 1896 to Emmersdorf on the Danube in Austria and there was a very special childhood thanks to her father short story writer, poems and other literary genres. This family environment will be a source of inspiration for the earliest works of our artist. For the sake of his father's health, the family was forced to transfer several, Bohemia, nell'est Europa, to Austria. Dombrowski same moves over different latitudes territorial and regional, study art in Graz and Vienna even though his youth was marked by his native Styria. Just eighteen years old he enlisted and fought in World War I on the front of Polish and Russian. In 1924 he moved to Graz, where he married. He had previously tried to organize his artistic activities in Berlin but the nostalgia of homeland had brought him to the house. His first steps in the art world were marked by a wide variety of graphic techniques he used to illustrate children's books, historical tales and adventure. Several of his paintings are female nudes subjects. But with brush and pencil draws even political scenes, morals, landscapes, classical works and a whole range of works that an artist plays to perfect their talents. His moment came in 1934 when you finally find the way that art has always dreamed, where it will find its best expression, and that will allow him to work and create a distinctive style: engraving on wood. With certain influences expressionistic, Dombrowski will be presented in various competitions and will begin to make themselves known. From 1935 to the 1938 create a portfolio 14 male historical figures entitled "Bildnisse deutscher male" among which appear the portraits of W. von der Vogelweide, You. von Hutten, I. Side, G. Berlichingen, Henry I (that will be purchased by the Head of State), A. Hofer (these six incisions in the luxurious original edition are available, autographed by the artist, at the publishing Schneider). It will be his first truly popular series of works that earned him the esteem of the public and the critics. From these come on opportunities and assignments. Work with several weeklies and magazines illustrating the most disparate things. In 1938 he was appointed professor and director of one of the classes of graphic art at the Academy of Applied Arts in Monaco. Become a manager of cultural services for Styria. Increase its exhibitions and his works are highly required. Increase its projection towards an artistic dimension of the European war but the truncated without appeal his artistic career as it is mobilized in 1941 and referred to as an officer on the Eastern Front. Despite this, his solo exhibition with many works held in 1943 alla "Young Art in the German Reich" a Vienna con un grandissimo successo. Unfortunately, the same year his studio was completely destroyed by Allied bombers. In 1944 publish an illustrated book, the last of the wartime, intitolato "Hearty soldiers Calendar" (calendar of brave soldiers) whose edition will be completely destroyed by another bombing in Frankfurt 1945. In the same year, after the war, is held by the Americans and interned for two years in a concentration camp near Salzburg. Resumed his artistic life only 1948 when he moved to Siegsdorf, in Upper Bavaria, where it will build its new home. He continued his work as a draftsman and painter mainly illustrating children's books. Starting from 1951 works closely with illustrations of different calendars such as the annual "Herzhafter Hauskalender", "Our children" s "friends gift". In the 50s, finally, came the first awards post-war: Medaglia la "Archduke Johann", in 1959 the "Wappenadler" of the city of Krems and, in 1971, Award Krueger. Between the 70s and 80s exhibited in several exhibitions earning prizes. In 1982 creates a foundation in Styria to help new artists. The following year he held a major exhibition in Salzburg over 200 engravings and 140 paintings. The same year he was granted by the Austrian Government the Grand Cross of Merit of the Republic. From this moment until the end of his days, receive many other awards, honors, and mentions that recognize and consecrate as one of the leading Austrian artists of this century. His greatest pride is to be made an honorary citizen of Siegsdorf. At the death of the artist 14 June 1985 in the same town, his work was donated to the city of Graz and the Foundation of Heimatmuseum of Traunstein. The nonagenarian artist has left us an immense work of extraordinary quality. Many of his works appear as transpositions of works by Caspar David Friedrich, but engraved in the wood. Its trees, and representatives, la natura, the desolate landscapes tell us many things and romance always shines through his paintings. But at the same time the signs that affects Dombrowski pierce the wood to bring in real-time from the historical past. As so often an artist known (in his country) remains unknown to the rest of the world. But again we are reminded of the phrase Gracian, stating that this was not his century, many more will be, genius is immortal.
