Justin Zimmerman

Justin Zimmerman è un artista di aeronautica internazionale, militare e marittima nato a Vanderbijlpark in Sudafrica il 22 maggio 1963. Fin dalla tenera età di sei anni ha disegnato, dipinto e costruito modelli aerei e armature, ma ha iniziato lo studio sistematico dell’arte a dodici anni. Poco prima di aver completato la scuola, a sedici anni, tiene la sua prima mostra. Dopo aver terminato la scuola ha frequentato per quattro anni il Vaal triage technikon studiando Graphic design e arte. Dopo il suo ultimo anno di studi, nel 1986, Justin era tenuto dalla legge a svolgere il servizio militare di leva che ha effettuato nelle forze di polizia. E’ stato assegnato a un reparto della polizia per la ricostruzione grafica del viso e del cranio, dove erano impiegati diversi artisti qualificati che, sotto la sua direzione, eseguivano lavori artistici e illustrazioni. Durante gli anni ’90 e fino al 2003, Justin ha disegnato diversi pastelli con soggetti di fauna selvatica e oli di nudi classici e figure. Il neoclassicismo e il romanticismo hanno influenzato la sua arte in quel periodo. Dopo il 2003, ispirandosi al colorato, vivace e vigoroso realismo degli artisti dell’aviazione britannica Robert Taylor e Nicolas Trudgian, ha deciso di rivolgere finalmente la sua attenzione all’aviazione, la grande passione con cui aveva iniziato la sua carriera artistica a sei anni. Inizialmente il suo obiettivo era di rappresentare la leggendaria forza aerea militare sudafricana ma, nel giro di cinque anni, la sua reputazione è cresciuta portandogli clienti che richiedevano soggetti di arte militare internazionale la maggior parte dedicati al secondo conflitto mondiale. Nel 2009 è entrato a far parte del forum internazionale Wehrmacht di collezionisti di materiale militare ed ha iniziato a fare una serie di schizzi dedicati a militari tedeschi decorati nella seconda guerra mondiale e le relative stampe per completare le collezioni di uniformi dei membri di quel forum. Oggi queste stampe sono già state vendute in sedici paesi, e qualcuna è stata anche firmata da assi militari tedeschi sopravvissuti al conflitto. Le sorprendenti ed eclettiche tecniche grafiche di Justin Zimmerman gli hanno anche permesso di disegnare molti schizzi di scene di combattimento che sono diventate stampe litografiche in edizione limitata. Justin è anche un quotato artista d’automobili: ha dipinto su commissione molte auto d’epoca e di famose Formula 1. Al momento Justin sta lavorando a soggetti di aviazione sud africana e internazionale, militare e marittima, a dipinti a olio su tela di soggetti automobilistici per la televisione Belga. Egli esegue un lavoro di grafica a matita con ogni due o tre opere d’arte. Justin vive a Cape Town, Sud Africa con la moglie e due figlie.

Justin Zimmerman is an international Aviation, Military, and Maritime artist that was born on the 22 May 1963 in Vanderbijlpark South Africa. From an early age of 6 he drew, painted and constructed model aircraft and armour, but took art at school until his 12th and final year. Just before he completed school he had his first art exhibition at the age of 16. After finishing school he completed 4 years at the Vaal triangle technikon studying Graphic design and art. After his final year of studies in 1986, Justin was forced by the law at the time to do military service, so chose the police force as his allotted service. He joined a facial and skull reconstruction department within the police eventually employing a number of qualified artists under him doing everything from fine art, to illustrations and cartooning. During the 90’s and up until 2003, Justin did wildlife pastels, as well as classic nudes and figures in oils. Neo-Classicism and Romanticism were great influences on his art at the time. Post 2003, being inspired by the colourful, vibrant, and soulful realism of the British aviation artists, Robert Taylor and Nicolas Trudgian, he decided to finally turn his full attention to aviation art, the great passion he had started his art career out with, at 6 years old. Initially his aim was to do Air Combat legends of the South African Air Force, but within 5 years he was doing Aviation, Maritime, and Military art for international clients, most of it, World War 2. In 2009 he joined an international Wehrmacht forum of militaria collectors and started doing a series of German World War 2 ‘Ace’ sketches and their related prints, to complement the uniform collections of these members. Today these prints have already been sold to 16 countries, and have also been signed by surviving German Aces. Justin Zimmerman’s striking, and very advanced pencil techniques have also enabled him to draw many combat sketches of which he does limited edition litho prints of. Justin is also an Auto artist, having painted an drawn many classic cars, and Formula 1 greats on commission. At the moment, Justin is doing south African and international Aviation, Military, Maritime, and Auto art on Belgium flux canvas with pure pigment Italian oils. He includes a pencil artwork with every second or third artwork. Justin lives in Cape town, South Africa with his wife and two daughters.

image002I don’t think this Ace needs much introduction, Adolf Galland, (19 March 1912 – 9 Feb 1996) was an Air Ace and Luftwaffe General credited with 104 victories against the Western Allies.

He flew 705 combat missions and commanded JG26 with distinction, earning him the Knights Cross with Oak leaves, diamonds and swords.

From March 1945, he commanded the world’s first operational jet squadron, Jagdverband JV 44, flying the Messerschmitt 262.
